Encrypted USB Key Fob

I found a 1G USB key on the sidewalk today. The plastic case was missing and it was a bit muddy but it works. So, I decided to play around and set it up with an encrypted filesystem on Fedora 8.

If you run gnome then you will be prompted for the password when you insert the thumbdrive.

#!/bin/bash

# Encrypt a USB key fob for use in linux.
# This will totally nuke any existing data.

The Last Unchicken

We ate the last unchicken that's been sitting in our freezer since Now And Zen went out of business. Now that we know how to make them it didn't seem quite so special.

I'm still planning to make several and stuff them in the freezer.

Xen Networking in Fedora 7+ and RHEL

Starting with Fedora 7 if you use Xen you will notice a new subnet and a
bridge automagically being created by libvirt. This is great for desktop experimenting, but if you are running this on a server you probably have an opinion on how your network should be configured.

Here's how to revert to manually controlled network settings.

Fedora 7 & 8 dom0 Crashes Due to domU Traffic Shaping

A Fedora 7 dom0 I have crashes with null pointer dereferences in tcp_tso_segment. After upgrading to F8 this is still happening. This seems to stem from traffic shaping in a busy domU fedora mirror server. Poking around it looks like this bug http://lists.openwall.net/netdev/2007/02/09/16 Well, they fixed that by twiddling net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.c but I think something in my Xen enviro with a combination of a busy bridge and traffic control rules is still tripping up on net/ipv4/tcp.c line 2241 "skb = skb->next;" from what I can decypher.

Unturkey 2007

Well, the unturkey came out great! Getting it to unroll will take a bit of tweaking. Jill says we won't use that stuffing recipe next time. We used her own gravy recipe too.

Knit Doggie Sweater

I started knitting a doggie sweater last week. You can tell Thor can't wait to
try it on. I'm afraid it may wind up being a little too large and I may have
to force Cheech to wear it.

Almost "Thanksgiving"

We've been busy getting ready for tomorrow. The unturkey is in the process of being constructed. The most important item for tomorrow is already in the freezer. :)

Happy Thanksgiving

We're not having a traditional dinner today, we usually don't. We've celebrated thanksgiving on the weekend afterwards with friends; vegan, vegetarian, and otherwise for years. The tradition started when we were in college. Additionally my birthday sometimes falls on thanksgiving and Jill's follows soon after so it also makes for a time-saving triple combo.

Turkey Spotting

On my ride to work this morning I ran into a flock of turkeys at Chestnut Park I counted 30 I believe. Here is a grainy picture from my phone.

What about Tofu.org?

I've had this domain sine 1997 and I've never done anything very interesting with it. I'm trying to decide what I want to do with this whole blog and drupal thingy. I'm thinking about moving all this to tofu.org and opening it up for the world. For the moment I guess I'll keep getting accustomed to the software and ponder where I want to split personal and communal content, if there is such a split.
