- This article suggests that cheaper creatine may have chemical contaminants, one of which is sarcosine. "Sarcosine is contained on and prepared from mammalian skeletal muscles." The article also suggests "there's a small chance of contamination from a prion". I'm sure you've heard of mad-cow disease.
